Bearcats Battle UPS To Draw; Remain Tied for NWC Lead
TACOMA: The Willamette University No. 4 ranked women’s soccer team battled No. 9 University of Puget Sound to a 1-1 draw at Peyton Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the tie, the two teams remain deadlocked at the top of the Northwest Conference, both with 7-1-1 records. Willamette (12-1-1 overall) holds the tiebreaker should the teams remain tied for the rest of the season by virtue of their 2-1 overtime win in Salem earlier this year.
In Sunday’s game, forward Susan Butler got her seventh goal of the season. Butler scored at the 5:35 mark when she deflected a shot off a UPS defender and into the net.
The Bearcats held that lead for only seven minutes before Lea john took a cross from Elizabeth Ptiman to tie the game.
The second half and both overtime periods were scoreless, though both teams had solid chances to win.
Midfielder Jessica Lammers hit the crossbar with a shot in the first overtime while UPS pounded 12 corners and 14 shots against Bearcat goalie Kari Woody.
While UPS enjoyed a 12-4 lead in corners, the Bearcats held a 17-14 edge in shots. Logger goalie Erin Williams had seven saves.
Willamette returns home next weekend, hosting George Fox on Saturday and Pacific on Sunday. Both games begin at noon.
