Women Upset by Whitworth Pirates in First Defeat of The Season, 0-1
Spokane, WA - Willamette saw a perfect record fall as the Whitworth Pirates made a first half goal. The Bearcats, ranked fourth in the nation, allowed Whitworth's Katy Jones to score (her first of the season), assisted by Jael Hagerott and Mary Hultgrenn.
The Bearcats are now 11-1 overall and 6-1 NWC. They are now tied for first place in the NWC with Puget Sound, who they will play on October 19 at Tacoma, WA. The Pirates improved to 10-2 overall and 5-2 NWC.
Willamette had five shots on goal against Whitworth, but two of those came especially close to tying the match. In the first half a free kick by Laura Uhlmansiek hit the post. In the second half Michelle Gregoire got a solid head on a crossing pass with Whitworth keeper Jenn Miller screened on the play. But Pirate midfielder Ashley Fisk jumped and blocked the shot attempt with her body to preserve the lead with 22:30 to play.
The Bearcats were outshot, 12-9 but had a lead with shots on goal, 5-3.
Willamette travels to play PLU and UPS at Tacoma next weekend. Whitworth travels to play Pacific and George Fox next weekend.
