Bearcats Lose Season Opener 82-65
SALEM: Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Willamette University women’s basketball team lost 82-65 to the College of St. Catherine (MN) in the opening game of the Bon Appetit Classic at Lewis and Clark Friday night.
St. Kate’s senior Kate Stodolka scored 27 points while freshman Kate Bremmer added 13 points.
Led by Deanna Lund (14 points), Jammie Muth (13 points), Simmie Muth (12 points) and Megan Scheelar (10 points), the Bearcats led for most of the first half.
A 3-pointer by Natalie Lyzhof with four seconds to play in the first half put St. Kate’s on top 42-39 at the break.
The Bearcats outrebounded CSC 48-42 led by guard Simmie Muth’s nine boards. Muth also recorded four assists. But it was 33 Bearcats turnovers that spelled defeat for the Bearcats in the 2003-2004 opener.
The Classic will continue Saturday evening with Willamette taking on La Verne (CA) at 6 pm and St. Catherine facing the host Lewis & Clark Pioneers at 8 pm.
