Football Scores Big With Win Over Pacific Lutheran
Salem: In 2 hours and 50 minutes the Willamette Bearcats, 6-2 overall, 3-0 NWC, were able to walk away with a 36-27 win over the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran, 4-3, 2-2. The Bearcats, ranked 2nd in the NWC next to Linfield, scored two touchdowns before the Lutes got on the board and were up 13-0.
In the second quarter the Lutes came back and tied the game up 13-13. This would begin a back and forth scoring trade off until the Bearcats converted a field goal at 27-27 that lifted them to a 3 point lead in the fourth quarter. The lead would propel the Bearcats to score their final touchdown and end the game at 36-27.
For the Lutes junior quarterback Dusty Macauley would attempt 41 passes, complete 26 and have 2 intercepted for 242 yards and zero touchdowns. Senior RB Aaron Young would rush 13 times for no lost yards and 74 gained and 1 touchdown; he would also receive 8 times for 20 yards. Junior tight end Brian Deely would receive 7 times for 94 yards.
The Bearcats senior flanker Greg Reed rushed 17 times for a net of 183 yards, 3 touchdowns, averaging 10.8 yards per carry. Senior quarterback Tyler Gaspard completed 12 of 17 passes for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Brett Meyer made 9 receptions for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Bearcats will be in Portland Saturday facing off against the Lewis & Clark Pioneers at 1:00pm.
