Leopards top Bearcats in Bon Appetit Classic

Portland, Ore. — La Verne rallied from a nine-point deficit at half to beat the Willamette University women's basketball team 61-60 in the final night of the Bon Appetit Classic at Lewis & Clark’s Pamplin Sports Center.
Senior Sydni Myrick led the Leopards with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting and also grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Bearcats, behind Deanna Lund’s 12 points and Simmie Muth’s 11, took a 35-26 lead at halftime, but the Leopards opened the second half with an 8-0 run, to get back in the game.

La Verne’s first lead came at the 14:30 mark when junior Kourtney Hicks hit a jumper to go up by 1. The lead was short-lived, as each team managed short runs the rest of the game and the lead changed hands four times in the final 12 minutes.

The Leopards took the lead for good at the 1:18 mark when sophomore guard Audy Macdonald hit a 3 pointer off a feed from Tiffany Joyner to break a 58-58 deadlock.

Willamette had two last-minute trips to the line but were only able to convert on one shot each time to close within one. Hicks had a chance to ice the game with nine seconds left, but missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Willamette senior Jammie Muth had a last-second 3-point attempt for the win but the shot missed and preserved the Leopards victory.

Macdonald scored 13 points for La Verne while Joyner added 11. Willamette was paced by the 12 points of senior Deanna Lund and 11 from senior Simmie Muth.

La Verne finished the Classic with a 1-1 record while Willamette finished 0-2.
