Merten Garners NWC Player of the Week Honors; Bearcats Move Up to No. 8 in National Rankings

SALEM: Senior Anne Merten was named the Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week for women's soccer Monday, capping a weekend that saw the Corvallis, OR forward scored three goals on Saturday and assist on the game-winning goal on Sunday.

Merten tallied her hat trick Saturday in a 5-1 defeat of No. 24 Whitworth. The Pirates are the only team to beat the 15-1-2 Bearcats this season.

Merten assisted on Cayly Christensen's goal in second overtime Sunday as Willamette eeked out a 1-0 win over Whitman.

Goalie Kari Woody recieved honorable mention Defensive POTW Monday for her 16 saves in two games.

In Division III national rankings, the Bearcats moved up to No. 8. They are tied with UPS for the top spot in the West Region. Five NWC teams are in the top ten west region rankings.

UPS is No. 4 nationally. Whitworth is No. 24
