Reeves, Gouveia Lead Bearcats to 2-1 win Over Whitman
SALEM: Defender Zach Reeves and forward Kyle Gouveia both scored goals from 20 yards out as the Willamette University men’s soccer team (8-7-3, 7-5-1 NWC) defeated Whitman College (6-12, 2-11) 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Reeves (pictured left) scored at the 38-minute mark, picking up a loose ball near the top of the box and driving a shot past Whitman goalie Eric Dottara to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. It was Reeves first goal of the season.
Vico Rust tied the score for Whitman when he converted a pass from Peter Randall to knot the game just before halftime.
Gouveia scored his game-winning goal just a minute and a half into the second half when he took a pass from Adam Moshofsky and sent a screaming shot over Dottarar into the upper right corner of the net.
The Bearcats had two early first half goals disallowed due to offsides calls.
Bearcat goalie Dane Meier recorded seven saves as the two teams both launched 23 shots.
Willamette concludes its season next Saturday with a 1:30 game against Linfield. The game will be played on the artificial turf at McCulloch Stadium where the Bearcats are now 2-0-1.
