Varlamos Scores Twice as Pirates Knock off Bearcats 4-0
SALEM: Niko Varlamos scored a pair of goals as the Whitworth Pirates secured their hold on third place in the Northwest Conference with a 4-0 win over the Willamette University men’s soccer team Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Whitworth (12-5, 7-5 NWC) took the lead early in the first half when Bobby LaBelle scored off an assist from Brad Suhm. Varlamos made it 2-0 at the 18-minute mark on the first of two assists for Todd Sabrowski.
Suhm scored at the 81-minute mark off a corner kick from Sean Lambrecht, two minutes before Varlamos closed the scoring at the 83-minute mark off assists to Sabrowski and Lambrecht.
Willamette falls to 7-7-3 overall, 6-5-1 in the NWC.
Whitworth out-shot the Bearcats 25-9 in the game. Goalie Dane Meier had seven saves for Willamette. Kevin Bostock got the shutout for Whitworth.
The Bearcats play Whitman Sunday afternoon in Salem. Game time is 1:30 pm.
