Bearcat Baseball Makes it Three In a Row
ATHERTON, CA- The Willamette University men’s baseball team completed its sweep off the Menlo College tournament by beating the host team 11-5, raising their season record under new head coach Matt Allison to 3-0.
After a dramatic ninth inning comeback in the opening game of the tournament Friday, Travis Shull hit a three-run homer in the first inning — one of his ten hits over the weekend — as the Bearcats took out Westmont 11-6 Saturday afternoon to go to 2-0.
In Sunday’s nightcap, the final game of the tournament, Travis Shull had five singles, Kelly Gilmore knocked in three runs in the first three innings and Andrew Bartels hit a two-run homer as the Bearcats went up 6-1 in the first four innings. Colin Griffin put the game away with a two-run single in the seventh,
Jeff Jensen picked up his second win of the season, pitching seven strong innings of two-run baseball. Gilmore was 2-2 with 4 RBI. Bartels scored three times and had three hits.
In Saturday’s game against Westmont, Shull was 4-5 and put the Bearcats on top early with a three-run first inning home run. Westmont rebounded with a five-run fourth inning to go ahead 5-3, but the Bearcats scored in each of the next four-innings, including a four-run seventh to give Drew Herbert the win in relief.
In the seventh, Griffin had a two-run bases loaded single and the Bearcats used a bases-loaded walk and a sac fly from Matt Drahn (2-4, 3 RBI) to finish off Westmont.
Herbert pitched 5.2 innings for the win, giving up five hits and two runs.
The Bearcats remain in California for a four-game set against Point Loma University in San Diego.
