Bearcat Men Deal Point Loma Nazarene its First Loss of the Season
SAN DIEGO, CA- Matt Johnson blasted a three-run home run and Matt Drahn knocked in a key insurance run as the Willamette University men’s baseball team dealt Point Loma Nazarene College its first loss of the season Friday, winning the second game of a double-header, 5-4.
The Bearcats (4-2) dropped the first game of the double header as Point Loma (8-1) scored five runs in the fifth inning to cruise to a 10-1 win.
In the nightcap, the Bearcats got seven strong innings from Zach Vande Griend as his complete game victory featured six strikeouts and eight hits.
The two teams complete the four game series tomorrow afternoon.
The Bearcats broke on top early in their victory as Johnson and Colin Griffin opened the game with singles. Travis Shull drove in Johnson with a base hit and the Bearcats led 1-0.
After Point Loma tied the game in the bottom of the first, the two teams remained scoreless until the fifth. Drahn and Matt Rasmussen walked before Johnson hit his three-run homer with two outs.
Point Loma responded with four hits and a pair of runs in their half of the fifth to pull within one at 4-3.
In the Bearcats sixth, Shull scored on an RBI shot to right field that went for an error. Point Loma again scored to pull within one, but Vande Griend shut the door in the seventh inning, striking out the last two batters of the game.
Johnson was 2-4 with a pair of ruins scored and three RBI.
