Point Loma Hands Bearcats Their First Loss of Season
San Diego, CA (2/12) - Point Loma Nazarene University posted an easy victory Thursday afternoon after banging out 20 hits in a 16-3 thumping of visiting Willamette University. The Sea Lions remain undefeated on the season at 7-0 while the Bearcats were handed their first loss of the year and fall to 3-1.
A close contest through the first few innings, PLNU would finally break out with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-0. Third baseman Ralphie Marin's two-run single opened the gates for the Sea Lions who pounded out six hits in the frame.
Point Loma wasn't finished yet, plating three runs in the sixth to up their advantage to 12-0. Two-run homers by first baseman Jud Richards and center fielder Wayne Scheler in the seventh and eighth innings put the Sea Lions up 16-1. The Bearcats scored a pair of ninth inning runs for the final 16-3 margin.
PLNU starter Chris Empio picked up his first win of the year after a one-hit allowed, nine-strikeout effort over four innings. The Sea Lions employed five other hurlers Thursday, none who lasted more than 1.2 frames. Altogether PLNU pitching accounted themselves well, scattering six hits and fanning 13 batters.
Offensively, Richards went 5-for-5 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Second baseman Mike Acuna added four hits while Marin and shortstop David Parker, each contributed three hits and a pair or RBI. Scheler scored twice and knocked home four runners.
These same two teams will meet Friday in Carroll Land Stadium at 11:00 am for a non-conference doubleheader.
