Bearcats Defeated by Loggers
TACOMA, Wash. - The Loggers improved to 17-16 and 11-9 NWC, while the Bearcats dropped to 15-19 and 11-13 in NWC play.
In game 1 the Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Ken Halpin (2-3, 2 RBI) doubled to center field to score Andrew Bartels and John Cox. The Loggers rallied back to score two in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run homerun by Olin Wick (2-4, 3 RBI). The Loggers took the lead in the 5th inning when Matt Gylling scored on a failed pickoff and an error by the shortstop. In the 6th, Wick doubled to score Sam Bunnett (3-4, 2 RBI) pushing the lead to 4-2. The Bearcats got one back in the 7th on a sacrifice fly by Matt Johnson, making it 4-3. That was all the Bearcats would get, as UPS scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Brent Weidenbach got things going with a triple to right center. Mike Kennewick (2-3, 1 RBI) knocked him in with a double and scored on an error by the catcher.
Chris Owens (7-2) pitched eight solid innings for the Loggers, allowing only three runs on eight hits and striking out four. Eddie Monge earned his third save pitching one inning of relief.
Jeff Jensen (4-6) was pinned with the loss, allowing five earned runs on 12 hits and striking out four.
In game 2 Willamette again jumped out to an early lead. Travis Shull (3-5, 4 RBI) doubled in Woldseth and Griffin, followed by a double from Drahn to score Shull to make it 3-0 in the top of the first. In the second Nick Arndt (2-4, 4 RBI) doubled to right field to score Michael Olsen. The Loggers broke the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring seven runs and going up 8-3. Bunnett to score one run, Olsen (2-4, 2 RBI) singled through the right side to score two, Arndt doubled down the right field line to score three more, and Gylling (2-4, 1 RBI) finished the scoring with a double to left center to score Arndt. The Bearcats and Loggers each scored one in the 4th inning. Willamette rallied in the 5th and 6th innings to score two runs in each inning and closing the score to 9-8. Devon Zeller and Eddie Monge came in and shutdown the Bearcat bats allowing only one hit in the final three innings. The Loggers added two insurance runs in the 8th inning.
The Loggers and Bearcats face off again Sunday, April 25th, at noon.
