Softball Takes Two From Pacific; Takes a Loss in Completion of postponed March 16th game

Forest Grove - Willamette secured a split of their Northwest Conference softball series with the Boxers by taking two games at Lincoln Park.

In game one, the Bearcats broke open a 4-3 game with a four-run fourth inning en route to an 11-3 victory. In the second game, Nicole Romero and Britteny Dearing combined to allow the Boxers four hits in a 7-0 win. The two teams finished up by completing a game suspended by darkness on Mar. 16. The Boxers won the game 9-6.

The Boxers (15-13, 6-10 NWC) made it through the games with a number of injuries. Pitcher Nikki Smith (Fr., Gaston, Ore.) did not play due to an injury to her pitching arm, while a number of position players competed through other hurts.

Down 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings in the opener, Pacific came within one of the Bearcats (14-13, 10-6 NWC) in the third on a two-run double by Kelsey Herstad (So., Port Orchard, Wash.) and a RBI single from Jimo Fujimoto (Fr., Mililani, Hawaii). Willamette, however, killed the Boxer rally in the fourth, scoring two runs on Molly Barnes' double and RBI singles by Jen Hammond and Meredith Runyan.

The Bearcats added two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Dearing, meanwhile, allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings of relief to earn the win. Jaime Kraushaar (So., Clackamas, Ore.) took the loss by allowing five earned runs on nine hits and four walks.

Willamette opened the nightcap by scoring two runs the first and second innings, capped by Barnes' RBI single in the second frame. They added a single run in the fifth on a Lindsey Braun single and two in the sixth on a Kim Boscacci ground out and a wild pitch.

Romero, meanwhile, allowed only one hit, a bunt single by Jessica Wells (Fr., Pendleton, Ore.) in the second, in five innings to pick up the win. Trinity Smith (So., Willits, Calif.) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits and four walks.

Cari Schruth led the offense for Willamette, going 6 for 7 with four runs scored and a RBI. Hammond finished 3 for 6 with two RBI and a run scored. Jenelle Andrews (Sr., Lewiston, Idaho) and Wells each finished 2 for 5 to lead the Boxers.

Willamette returns to action on April 9th at Pacific Lutheran.
