Coaches' Poll Picks Willamette Women's Soccer Second
SALEM— Northwest Conference coaches picked Willamette University’s women’s soccer team second behind rival University of Puget Sound as 2004 conference favorites in the coaches pre-season poll released this week.
With the chance to win a third consecutive Northwest Conference title, UPS (18-2 overall and 12-1-1 in the NWC last season) received seven of the nine first place nominations. The Loggers advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals last season and return with four First Team All-Northwest Conference selections, including 2003 NWC Defensive Player of the Year Bridget Stolee.
Willamette, returning First Team All-NWC midfielder Susan Butler and junior forward Benna Hindman (34 points with 12 goals and 10 assists last season), were ranked second by the NWC coaches.
Having won nine NWC titles in the last 11 years, the Bearcats (16-1-2 overall and 11-1-2 in the NWC last season), open their season Saturday, September 4 at home against Southern Oregon University.
Collecting the rest of the votes in the NWC poll were Whitworth, Whitman, Pacific Lutheran, Pacific, Linfield, George Fox, and new participants Lewis and Clark.
