Two’s Never Lose: Almost All Bearcat Fall Sports Teams Picked for Second In Pre-Season Coaches Polls

SALEM — Maybe the Bearcat motto for the upcoming fall sports season should be “We Try Harder.” In all but one of the fall pre-season coaches polls released for 2004, Bearcat teams were picked to finish second.

“Sure we want to be the favorite to win every conference sport,” said Athletic Director Mark Majeski. “But what these pre-season polls show is that we’re a well-balanced and very competitive athletic department in every sport. That’s a credit to our coaches and our student-athletes.”

Football, volleyball and women’s soccer were all picked to finish second by Northwest Conference coaches. Willamette’s nationally ranked cross-country team would probably be picked for first, but the NWC does not do a pre-season poll for cross country.

The only fall sport not picked for second was men’s soccer. But new Bearcat head coach Jeff Enquist, a veteran coach who should bring stability to the Bearcat soccer program, is bringing in several new recruits to help boost a team that returns a solid core of players.

“I think we’ll be better in men’s soccer than people think,” said Majeski. “But more importantly, like our volleyball program under third-year coach Tricia Wright, I think we’ll see rapid improvement and greater competitiveness this year.”

Bearcat athletes return to campus on August 14 for pre-season camps. Men’s soccer kicks off the fall sports season with a home match on September 1. Football, volleyball and women’s soccer are all at home the on either September 3 or 4. Check for updates on the WU home athletics page for times and locations of upcoming Bearcat events.
