Bearcat Volleyball Beats PLU in Five

SALEM — Celia Batlan’s service ace gave the Bearcats a 20-18 victory in the fifth game and a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Pacific Lutheran University (2-6, 1-1 NWC), in a Northwest Conference volleyball match Saturday night at the Cone Field House.

The Bearcats (8-2, 2-0 NWC) were down 2-1 in games before coming back to take the final two games. Game scores were 30-28, 23-30, 27-30, 30-26 and 20-18.

In game four, the freshman tandem of Julie Christine (12 kills, five blocks) and Jordyn Smith (10 kills, three service aces) helped the Bearcats to an early 13-7 lead.

But led by hitter Stephanie Turner (21 kills), the Lutes came back to tie the game at 21-all. Outside hitter Lauren Thompson (16 kills) notched three of her team-high seven blocks as the Bearcats pulled ahead 28-23 before closing out the game.

In the deciding fifth game, a Turner block put PLU up 14-10. After a timeout, the Bearcats roared back behind a pair of kills from Angie Sammons (20 kills, 11 digs) and a pair of blocks by Thompson and Christine to tie the game at 14-14. The teams traded points until Batlan’s serve finally ended the 2:20 minute match.

For the Bearcats, Kristen Halleck had 12 kills and 22 digs and Jodi Zaffino had 56 assists.

For PLU, Turner’s 21 kills led the way. Lina Peloli had 15 kills and Kati McGinn added 12. Gina Dimaggio had 50 assists and Megan Kosel led PLU with 27 digs.
