Bearcat Women Make Short Work of Southern Oregon in 5-1 Win
SALEM — It took the Willamette University women’s soccer team less than three minutes to score their first goal of the season as the Bearcats beat Southern Oregon University in their season opener 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Sophomore Laura Uhlmansiek (pictured left) scored that first goal in just 2:34 on a 35-yard shot after taking a corner kick from Naomi Baez. The Bearcats scored again at the 9-minute mark when Jessica Lammers knocked in a shot off an assist from Nicole Dahl.
After Southern Oregon’s Stacey Ermini scored on a 30-yard shot over goalie Kristin Muramoto’s head, the Bearcats answered with a goal at 37:50 when sophomore Michelle Gregoire headed in a shot off an assist from Uhlmansiek.
In the second half, Uhlmansiek added two more assists. The first came at 59 minutes when she fed Susan Butler to give the Bearcats a 4-1 lead.
Forward Brenna Hindman and Uhlmansiek combined to set up Gregoire for the game's final goal, this one on a header at the 67-minute mark.
The Bearcats out-shot Southern 24-8. They led in corner kicks 9-2.
Willamette travels to Gettysburg, PA next week for a pair of games in the Gettysburg tournament.
