Bearcats and Warner Pacific Battle to 2-2 Tie
SALEM — Reid Bennion netted a 60-yard shot just a minute and a half after Warner Pacific took a 2-1 lead, then the two teams battled through a pair of scoreless overtimes as the Willamette University men’s soccer team tied the Knights 2-2 Wednesday afternoon at Sparks Field.
Trevor Tharp gave Warner Pacific (2-2-1) the early lead with an unassisted goal from the top of the box at the 39-minute mark.
Freshman Mike Rodrigues tied the game for Willamette (0-1-2) when he netted a rebound off a missed shot. It was the Bearcats first goal of the season.
In the second half, just seconds after Bennion hit the post with a shot, Warner Pacific scored again, this time on a Graham Hartle goal. Matt Johnson got the assist.
Bennion’s goal came on a free kick at the 84-minute mark.
The Knights out-shot Willamette 30-17 for the game. But 15 of the Bearcats’ shots came after half time. Warner had nine corner kicks to two for the Bearcats.
Freshman goalie Reed Renfrow had five saves for Willamette in the first half. Dane Meier played the second half and overtime, recording seven saves.
Warner Pacific goalie Dustin Fuchs had four saves.
The Bearcats play Saturday at Western Baptist College before returning home next Wednesday for the Northwest Conference opener against Linfield.
