Bearcats Beat Their Second NWC Foe in Two Days
SALEM — The Willamette University women’s volleyball team beat their second Northwest Conference foe in two days, this time taking a 3-0 match win over Whitman College in the second day of the Willamette Invitational.
In action later on Saturday night, the Bearcats suffered their first match loss of the season, losing to a tough Cal State-Hayward team in five games. Willamette finished the two-day tournament with a 3-1 record.
In three games against Whitman College, the Bearcats came out on top with scores of 30-25, 30-14, and 30-13.
Junior Angela Sammons led the Bearcats with ten kills, followed by teammates Kristin Halleck (9) and Jordyn Smith (6). Celia Batlan and Halleck each had 27 digs in the match. Senior Jodi Zaffino had 33 assists.
For the Missionaries, Lyndsay Buckingham had 23 digs and Annie Kuvinka had 15. Kuvinka added 19 assists, but no Whitman player had more than six kills.
In the nightcap against Cal-State Hayward, the Bearcats fell in five games, 28-30, 30-25, 30-25, 23-30 and 11-15.
Halleck led the way with 22 kills while Lauren Thompson added 17. Halleck and Batlan had 21 and 11 digs respectively while Zaffino notched 56 assists.
For CSH, Jaqueline Randolph led the way with 21 kills. Nicole Brandt-Young added 15 kills and Victoria Cayetano. Ashley Williamson had 29 assists and Chelsea Baiz had 28. Randolph added 18 digs.
