Bearcats Sweep three straight games from UPS
SALEM — The Willamette University volleyball team swept three straight games from the University of Puget Sound, winning their opening match of the season by scores of 30-12, 30-23 and 30-25.
For Coach Tricia Wright’s team, it was a blend of experienced veterans and some impressive newcomers. Angie Sammons (pictured left) and Lauren Thompson had 12 and 9 kills respectively to pace the Bearcats. Senior setter Jodi Zaffino and freshman setter Jessica Drumm each had 14 assists to pace the Bearcats.
Kristen Halleck had 14 digs to pace the Bearcats, Libero Celia Batlan added ten. Freshman middle blocker Julie Christine led the Bearcats with three blocks.
For UPS, Monica Groves led the way with seven kills. Setter Emily Sabelhaus led the Loggers with 21 assists.
The Bearcats continue play on Friday evening with a 7:30 pm match against Claremont Mudd Scripps College. They also have two matches on Saturday; 2:30 pm against Whitman College and 7:30 pm against Cal State-Hayward.
