Bearcats Win First Match of Season, 2-1, Over Whitman
SALEM OR — Matt Lehman and Mark Conrad scored for the Bearcats as the Willamette University men’s soccer team won its first match of the season, defeating the Whitman Missionaries 2-1 at Sparks Field on Saturday afternoon.
Lehman got the Bearcats (1-4-2, 1-2 NWC) on top late in the first half when he converted a corner kick from Reid Bennion in the 40th minute.
Freshman Mark Conrad notched his first collegiate goal when he scored off a Pat Wettach assist in the 88th minute.
Whitman’s Daniel Beekman scored a minute later to bring the Missionaries within 2-1. Whitman’s record fell to 3-3-1, 1-1-1 NWC.
Willamette out-shot Whitman 12-5. The Bearcats led in corner kicks 7-2. Whitman goalie Eric Dottarar notched five saves while Willamette goalies Dane Meier has two saves.
The Bearcats look to make it two in a row against Whitworth on Sunday. Game-time is 2:30 at Sparks Field.
