Seasono Record Rise to 2-0 with Convincing Win Over Claremont Mudd-Sripps
SALEM — The Willamette University volleyball team raised its
season record to 2-0 with a convincing three game win over
Claremont Mudd-Scripps College (0-2) Friday night at the Willamette
Invitational Volleyball tournament.
Led by Angie Sammons 14 kills, and 11 more by Lauren Thompson (pictured left), the Bearcats swept by the Athenas 30-28, 30-20, 30-25.
In the first game, after the Bearcats took an early lead, the Athenas came back to tie the score at 28-all. Sammons broke the tie with a touch shot over the net. Then Thompson ended it with a convincing block.
In game two, the Bearcats took an early 12-6 lead and coasted to victory.
Thompson proved the difference again in game three. With Willamette up 15-13, Thompson put three straight shots away to give the Bearcats a five-point lead at 18-13. The Athenas could get no closer than three the rest of the game.
Kristen Halleck added ten kills for the Bearcats while freshman Julie Christine had six. Senior Jodi Zaffino had 25 assists in two games. Freshman Jessica Drumm added 13 assists in the final game.
The Bearcats will try to stay undefeated Saturday, facing Whitman College at 2:30 pm and Cal State Hayward at 7:30 pm. Both games are in the Cone Field House.
