Cross Country Set to Defend NWC Championships
SALEM, OR- With only a few days before the Northwest Conference Cross Country Championships, Willamette runners dispersed throughout Bush Park and McCulloch Stadium for their final runs before heading to this year’s championship in Spokane, WA Saturday. The race will be run at Wandermere Golf Course.
Currently ranked 8th in the nation and 1st in the West Region, both the Bearcat men’s and women’s teams are the defending NWC champions.
Conference rules allow only ten individual runners to compete. That makes life tough on Coach Matt McGuirk as he finalizes his ten runners for the meet.
“We’ve tried several times to expand the pool of runners so more of our runners can compete. The truth is we could field a team of runners who won’t be at the meet this weekend that could probably finish near the top,” said McGuirk. “Our runners have worked really hard this year for the chance to run at this meet. I just wish we could let them all run.”
The runners listed below will be traveling with the team this weekend. McGuirk, and assistant coaches Jimmy Bean and Amber Emery, will determine the final squads before the race.
