Gouveia, Rodrigues Lead Bearcats Over Whitman, 4-2
WALLA WALLA, WA — Senior Kyle Gouveia scored one goal and
assisted on another as the Willamette University men’s soccer team
defeated Whitman, 4-2, in a Northwest Conference match Sunday
afternoon at Whitman Field.
The win raises the Bearcats record to 5-10-1, 3-8-1 NWC. Whitman
falls to 2-12-2, 2-9 NWC.
Gouveia put the Bearcats up in the 3rd minute when he scored on a penalty kick. Just three minutes later, Gouveia’s cross found Trevor Jones open from five yard out and the freshman midfielder’s goal made it 2-0 Bearcats.
Goals from Egan Brinkman and Kirk Thorsen tied the game at 2-2 at the half.
Just seconds into the second half, Willamette’s Michael Rodrigues dribbled deep into Whitman territory and beat goalkeeper Eric Dottarar with a bullet into the left corner.
Steve Smith iced the game with an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute.
Whitman out-shot Willamette 21-17. Bearcat goalie Dane Meier had eight saves.
