McDonough's Late Goal Gives Pacific 1-0 Win Over Willamette
SALEM, OR — Matt McDonough headed in a corner kick in the 87th minute to give the Pacific University Boxers a 1-0 win over the Willamette University Bearcats in a Northwest Conference men’s soccer match Saturday at Sparks Field.
McDonough found the back of the net off a corner kick by Mark Madeira, helping the Boxers raise their season record to 4-6, 3-3 in the NWC. Willamette falls to 1-7-2 overall and 1-5 in the NWC.
The game was physical throughout, with 15 fouls on Pacific and 13 on the Bearcats. Pacific out-shot Willamette 15-8, including 11-3 in the second half. Pacific also had two goals called back because of fouls inside the box.
Dane Meier made five saves for the Bearcats. Jory Shene had four saves for Pacific.
The Bearcats head for Pacific Lutheran for a Sunday Northwest Conference match beginning at 2:30 p.m.
