WILLAMETTE SCORES TWICE IN LAST 3:29 TO PULL OUT 26-21 WIN OVER LUTES
PUYALLUP, Wash. — Cameron Walton's 4-yard run with 3:29 left in the fourth quarter and Quentin Brock's 2-yard dash with 53 seconds left lifted Willamette University to a 26-21 win over Pacific Lutheran University in a Northwest Conference game at Sparks Stadium. The Bearcats improved to 6-2 overall, 3-0 in the conference. PLU slipped to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the conference.
The Lutes took a 21-13 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter on Dusty Macauley's 72 yard pass completion to Mark McCall.
Willamette took over midway through the fourth quarter following a missed field goal and drove 80 yards in 10 plays for the touchdown. The Bearcats were aided on the drive by a personal foul penalty on the Lutes that resulted in an automatic first down on the PLU 29, and a 23-yard completion from Walton to Brett Meyer on a 4th-and-8th situation that gave Willamette a 1st-and-Goal from the PLU 4. Walton scored on the next play.
Willamette attempted a two-point conversion, but it was stopped when a pitch from Walton to Calvin Keyser-Allen was fumbled and went out-of-bounds.
The Lutes were forced to punt on their next possession and Willamette took over on their own 19 yard line. Walton completed two third-down passes — of 42 yards to Quentin Brock and 33 yards to Meyer — the last putting the ball on the PLU 2. Brock scored on the next play and Matt Bicocca kicked the extra point for the final margin.
The Lutes took a 7-0 lead on Macauley's 32 yard pass completion to McCall with 12:42 left in the first quarter. Walton threw a 20-yard completion to Meyer with 6:54 left in the opening quarter to tie the score.
The Lutes regained the lead when Chase Reed broke through the line for a 79-yard scoring run — breaking a tackle at the Willamette 20 and another on the Bearcat 2 before crossing the goal line — with 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Ryan Hernandez scored on a 49-yard run to pull the Bearcats to within one. Biocca's PAT kick was no good and the Lutes took a 14-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
For Willamette, Walton completed 10-of-23 passes for 185 yards. Meyer had 5 receptions for 104 yards. Hernandez led the rushing attack with 51 yards on 4 carries.
Macauley completed 8-19 pass attempts for 165 yards. McCall had 4 receptions for 127 yards. Reed gained 82 yards on 7 carries and Matt Steiner had 80 yards on 13 carries.
The Lutes outgained Willamette in total offense, 427 yards to 355, but PLU turned the ball over six times including four on fumbles. The PLU defense recovered two fumbles and intercepted one pass.
Willamette hosts Whitworth next Saturday in a Northwest Conference encounter at 1:00 p.m.
