Inside Bearcat Hoop
Last Week:
Bearcat Hoop opened its season with a split decision in two games
at the Golden Rule Shoot-Out in Caldwell, Idaho. The Bearcats
dropped their opening game 78-61 to host Albertson College of
Idaho, but rebounded to down Concordia of Portland, 83-55. While
several Bearcats played well, wing CJ Stuvland (Jr, Sunset HS) was
named to the All-Tournament team, following his breakout 25-point
performance on Saturday night.
This Week:
Willamette again takes to the road, as the Bearcats travel to
southern California for a pair of important Division III, West
Region contests. Friday, Willamette will battle
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and travel across town Saturday to battle
Pomona-Pitzer. Both schools are members of the SCIAC conference,
the NWC’s southern DIII rival. Both contests will be important in
terms of West Region wins (a criteria used by DIII in selecting
NCAA tournament teams). Pomona was the SCIAC champion a year ago,
and defeated the Bearcats in the preseason at the Redlands Holiday
tournament. Willamette and Claremont have not met in recent
years.
Inside Bearcat Hoop:
-Willamette welcomes back wing Michael Plank this week, as his
duties on the Willamette football team came to an end this past
weekend at Occidental in the DIII National Playoffs. Plank, a
junior for Stockton, CA, was a standout kick/punt returner for the
Bearcats, as well as the back-up quarterback.
-Senior PG Harold Sublett, Jr. (Phoenix, AZ) just missed the first triple double in school history Saturday night, recording a 7 pt, 9 rebound, 8 assist game.
-Willamette’s opening night loss was its first since the 2000-2001 campaign.
-Willamette will open its home schedule next weekend in the John Lewis Classic.
