Willamette Drops PLU in Double Overtime
SALEM, OR — Senior Kyle Gouveia ended his final home game as a Bearcat senior by scoring the game’s only goal two minutes into the second overtime as the Willamette University men’s soccer team beat Pacific Lutheran University in a Northwest Conference match Friday afternoon at McCulloch Stadium.
Gouveia scored in the second minute of the second overtime when he knocked in a rebound off a shot by senior Brian Lund. It was the second time this season that the Bearcats beat PLU 1-0.
The win raised the Bearcats record to 5-11-2 overall and 5-8-0 in the NWC. PLU falls to 6-12-1 overall and 5-7-1 in the NWC.
The Lutes out-shot Willamette 26-18, but Bearcat goalie Dane Meier recorded 11 saves for the shutout. PLU also led in corners 10-7. PLU goalie Rob Grolbert had six saves.
The Bearcats play their final game of the season Saturday at Pacific University.
