Cascade Beats Bearcats on Late Steal
SALEM, OR — Shara Brazzle stole an in- bounds pass and scored on a lay-up as the Cascade College Thunderbirds beat the Willamette University women’s basketball team 69-68 in a non-conference game at the Cone Field House Friday night.
Twice the Bearcats came back from double-digit deficits to take a 68-64 lead with 20 second remaining on two free throws by Vanessa Wyffels. But a 3-point shot by Molly Wilson pulled Cascade within one. On the ensuing in-bounds pass, Brazzle, who led Cascade with 20 points and seven assists, scored the game-winner.
Down 12 in the second half, the Bearcats clawed all the way back to tie the game on Ashley Mollet’s 3-point field goal with 6:13 to play. The teams traded the lead until the late second heroics of Brazzle.
For the game, Vanessa Wyffels scored 30 points to lead Willamette. Wyffels hit on all 12 of her shots from the field, and all six free throws. The junior transfer added15 rebounds and three assists.
Laura Payne added 12 points, including two key 3-point shots as the Bearcats were coming back in the second half.
Brazzle’s 20 paced Cascade. Wilson added 15 points and five boards. Lisa Berger-Freeman had 12 points and six boards.
The Bearcats fall to 1-6 on the season. Cascade is now 4-5.
