CSUH Beats Willamette 73-61
HAYWARD, CA — Leah Thornton scored 24 points as Cal State Hayward jumped out to a 12-0 lead, then withstood a second half Bearcat comeback as they defeated the Willamette University women’s basketball team 73-61 Friday night.
After falling behind 45-27 at halftime, the Bearcats out-scored Hayward 34-28 in the second half. Vanessa Wyffels led Willamette with 18 points and eight rebounds. Laura Payne added nine points and three assists. Julia Short and Beth Hickman each had eight points.
Thornton was 7 of 11 from the field and 10 of 10 from the free throw line to lead Hayward. Candida Reyes scored 19 points for CSUH.
Hayward out-rebounded the Bearcats 37-33 behind seven boards from Sarah Thornton. Thornton also had ten points. Hayward shot 46% for the game to 39% for Willamette.
The Bearcats play again in Hayward on Saturday, this time taking on Chapman University.
