Bearcats Drop Pair To No. 11 Washington in Season Opener
Seattle, WA- The Willamette University softball team dropped a pair at Washington’s Husky Stadium Saturday afternoon in its season opener, losing 8-0 and 18-0 to the University of Washington. The Huskies, ranked 11th in the nation among NCAA Division I teams, improved to 7-3, while the Bearcats fell to 0-2.
The Huskies out hit the Bearcats in the first game 8-2. Washington’s shortstop Ashley Charters hit her first homerun of the season, finishing the first game with 2 hits, 2 rbi, 3 runs and 6 stolen bases.
Caitlin Noble set a record for the Huskies with 16 strikeouts for a six-inning game. Noble picked up her fifth win for the Dawgs’.
For the Bearcats, freshman Brittany Tachara pitched well in her first collegiate start, striking out seven and allowing only eight hits.
First baseman Lindsey Braun and center fielder Kelsey Stolz had three put outs apiece.
In the second game, Callie Bergan and Dominique Lastrapes had three hits each, contributing to a total of 16 for the Huskies. Bergan added 3 rbi and 2 runs. Lastrapes had 2 runs and 2 rbi.
Washington’s left fielder Lauren Greer finished the day with two doubles. Sarah Hyatt and Kristen Rivera each connected for a homerun and a double, Hyatt’s second and Rivera’s fifth for the season.
Pitcher Ashley Boek faced 16 batters, striking out 10 for the Dawgs’ and allowing no hits.
At first base, Braun put out nine for the Bearcats, with four assists from shortstop Liz Gilgan.
The Bearcats are at home next weekend for the Capitol Cup Tournament.
