Pecht Leads Pirates to OT Win Over Bearcats, 71-66
SALEM, OR — Lance Pecht scored five of his team-high 23 points in overtime as the Whitworth Pirates defeated the Willamette University Bearcats 71-66 in a Northwest Conference game Friday night at the Cone Field House.
Pecht’s jumper at the 2:15 mark gave the Pirates the lead for good as Whitworth raised its season record to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the NWC. The Bearcats, who trailed the entire game until Todd Lewis’ three-point play tied it at 60-60 with 40 seconds to play, fall to 6-10 on the season, 3-4 NWC.
Lewis scored 17 points and hauled down 12 boards for Willamette. CJ Stuvland scored 19 points and John Olinger added ten.
The Bearcats fell behind early 20-10 on a JJ Jones jumper at the 9:16 mark. Willamette pulled within four at 26-22 on a four-point play from Ian Mansfield. Pecht’s jumper with 33 seconds in the first half put Whitworth up 30-24 at the break.
In the second half, the lead remained under ten points as the Bearcats slowly chipped away. A 3-pointer by Drew Miller and an Olinger foul shot got the Bearcats to within three at 60-57 with 3:01 to play. Neither team scored again in regulation until Lewis’s 3-point play sent the game to overtime.
Both teams were under 40% shooting for the game. The Pirates had 43 rebounds to 41 for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats are back in action at home Saturday night when they host Whitman College in another NWC game.
