Whitman Rolls Past Bearcats 69-57
SALEM, OR — Lizzy Washburn scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds as she led the Whitman Missionaries to a 69-57 win over the Willamette University women’s basketball team in a Northwest Conference game Saturday night at the Cone Field House.
After the Bearcats jumped out to a 12-4 lead, Whitman stormed (9-8 overall, 4-4 NWC) back with ten straight points, including five by Laura Vertatschitch (12 points, 4 rebounds). The Bearcats would never lead again as they fall to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the NWC.
Willamette pulled to within six points in the second half when Vanessa Wyffels scored to make the score 48-42 with 14:27 remaining. But a jumper by Washburn and a pair of free throws pushed the lead back to ten.
Wyffels led the Bearcats with 17 points on 8-12 shooting. Wyffels and Julia Short each grabbed six rebounds to pace the Bearcats. Wyffels also had team-high five assists.
Laura Payne added 14 points and Julia Short chipped in 11 for the Bearcats.
For Whitman, Sarah Laird added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench and Megan Higgins had eight boards, team-high four assists and six points.
