Willamette Men Swim Past Whitman With Six First Place Finishes

Salem, OR- The Willamette men swam for six first place finishes to take their first Northwest Conference meet against Whitman College.

The men challenged Whitman to a 92-81 finish, while the women fell short of a victory, 95-106.

Senior Avery Robinson and sophomore Kei Otawa brought home a total of five first place finishes for the Bearcats. In their first race, the 400yd medley relay, Robinson, Otawa, Cason Schmit, and David Sluss, ended on top with 3:56.82.

Robinson later competed in the 200yd individual medley relay (2:10.30) and the 200yd butterfly (2:16.89), to earn his second and third first place finish. Otawa came out strong in the 50yd freestyle (22.72) and the 200yd breaststroke (2:17.90), both good for first.

Geoff Kruse, a senior from Boulder, CO, raced to a first place finish for the Bearcats in the 500yd freestyle, with a time of 5:18.81.

For the women, sophomore Becca Fischer, swam for two individual firsts in the 50yd freestyle (26.13) and the 200yd breaststroke (2:29.92). Elise Tuttle, a junior from Nevada City, CA, earned first in the 200yd freestyle (2:05.33) and the 400yd freestyle relay with the help of teammates Jessica Lee, Bridget Sutherland, and Brittany Thiemens (3:52.98).

Sutherland, Thiemens, Shannon Gima, and Kate Miller took the 400yd medley relay with a time of 4:18.43.

For the Missionaries, Garth Brand and Keith Jarrett, split for two first place finishes each. Brand clocked 11:06.73 in the 1000yd freestyle and 2:17.65 in the 200yd backstroke. Jarrett earned a time of 1:54.35 in the 200yd freestyle and 51.63 in the 100yd freestyle.

For Whitman’s women, Nancy Alexander finished first in the 200yd individual medley (2:21.24) and the 200yd backstroke (2:17.26).

The Bearcats host Whitworth College and Cal-State Hayward tomorrow, January 15, at 1:00pm.
