Women's Basketball Fall Short 59-51 Against Linfield

McMinnville, OR- Freshman guard Laura Payne led Willamette with a game-high of 14 points and seven rebounds, neither of which could hold the Linfield Wildcats (6-7, 1-2NWC) from their first Northwest Conference
victory of the season.

The Bearcats’ two-game winning streak came to an end with a game as they fell 59-51, dropping Willamette to 6-7 overall and 1-2 in the NWC.

Linfield built a 28-22 halftime lead and were able to withstand a Bearcat rally in the second. For the game Willamette shot .333 to Linfield’s .323. The Bearcats connected on six three-pointers, including three by
Veronica Schneider (13 points).

Without leading scorer Vanessa Wyffels, (out due to concussions), the Bearcats out-rebounded the Wildcats 41-39, but turned over 22 balls to their 11.

Linfield led in the second half by nine points, but the Bearcats pawed their way to a 35-34 lead on Sara Clawson’s bucket with 13:04 in the game.

The Wildcats went back in front by four, 40-36, but Willamette tied it 47-47 with 3:48 left after Tracie Nygaard’s free throw.

Linfield again went on top by six after back-to-back baskets by junior Brandi Loring and a free throw by Angela Cornejo. Kari Woody kept the Bearcats within three at the 54-51, with under a minute left to play.

Willamette travels to Pacific University Saturday night, with a 6:00pm tip-off.
