Bearcats Rally for Tennis Win Over George Fox
SALEM, OR — The Willamette University men’s tennis team won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches as the Bearcats won their first match of the season, a 6-3 Northwest Conference victory over George Fox.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Jeff Garrison got the Bearcats first win, defeating Mac Ovenell, 6-2, 6-4.
No. 4 Jeff Hancock beat Ethan Headley, 6-0, 6-0. Shaun Mihalick, playing at No. 5 singles, defeated Jordan Vargas, 6-2, 6-4 and Garret Nakamatsu took out Sean McKenzie, 6-2, 6-4.
For the Bruins, at No. 1 singles, Tyson Hunter beat Matt McManus, 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Kyle Pearson (GFU) beat Andy Frey, 6-4, 6-3.
Bearcats Mahalik and Nakamatsu teamed up for a doubles win over Pearson and Ovenell, 8-4. Frey and Hancock (W) defeated Vargas and McKenzie, 8-4.
The Bruin’s Hunter and Hedley defeated McManus and Garrison. 8-1.
The Bearcats play again Saturday with the men hosting Lewis & Clark at the Courthouse Athletic Club while the women travel to Portland to face the Pioneers.
