Bearcats Swept By Cal State Hayward Despite Big Weekend From Halpin, Woldseth and Johnson
Though they led in each of the three games, the Willamette University Bearcat baseball team lost all three games on their California road trip this past weekend. Despite the losses, Bearcats Ken Halpin (pictured left), Dane Woldseth and Matt Johnson all had big weekends as Willamette prepares for the start of the Northwest Conference season this weekend against the University of Puget Sound.
The Bearcats fall to 2-5 on the young season and will open NWC play with a doubleheader Saturday against UPS beginning at noon. The Bearcats play UPS again Sunday in a single game beginning at noon.
In the first game against Cal State, Halpin drove in a pair of runs with three hits while Kelly Gilmore scored all three Willamette runs as the Pioneers won 11-3. John Cox and Matt Rasmussen each added a pair of hits for Willamette.
In game two on Saturday, Willamette took a 4-2 into the bottom of the sixth only to see Cal scored four runs in the next two innings to take a 6-4 victory. Woldseth was 3-3 in the game. Johnson connected on a two-run shot. Sean Anderson and Steve Johnson both had a pair of hits. Jeff Jensen pitched six innings, giving up four runs and striking out 4.
In the finale on Sunday, Willamette took a 2-0 lead in the first, only to see Hayward respond with 10 runs in the bottom of the inning as the home team took a 13-7 victory. Willamette chipped away at the big lead and got to within 11-7 after scoring a pair of runs in the seventh and eight innings, but the Pioneers hung on for the win.
Matt Johnson had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Halpin was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. John Cox was 2-4 with two runs scored. Adam Beebe pitched strong in middle relief, going 6 2/3 innings and giving up a single run.
