Women's Basketball Drops Final Home Game To Linfield, 77-67
SALEM, OR- The Willamette women’s basketball team ended their final home game with a loss to Linfield College, 77-67. The Wildcats improved to 11-10 overall and 6-6 NWC. Willamette dropped to 7-15 overall and 4-9 NWC.
Both teams were neck-n-neck for the first ten minutes of the game (17-17), before Linfield broke away after a jumper from Bayley Coblentz which put the Wildcats up by two. The Bearcats would never lead again as Linfield went on an 11-1 run..
Linfield shot 68% to Willamette’s 30% for the first half and returned to the court with an 18 point lead (44-26), to start the second half.
Willamette’s Vanessa Wyffels scored a game high 24 points. Teammates Jennifer Bell (13pts), Julia Short (9pts), and Ashley Mollet (7pts) sank a total of 29 points.
Bayley Coblenz led Linfield with 20 points. Lindsay Sticka went 3-for-3 from the field, totaling in ten points. Casey Stepan dropped 3-of-4, good for eight points.
The Bearcats came out strong in the second half, scoring 10 points to Linfield’s six in the first five minutes. Willamette was able to close the gap to within six, but came short on missed free-throw attempts.
Linfield went on to yet another run after Heidi Jurgens and Sticka sank a pair of free-throws, as the Wildcats scored five straight to ice the game.
The Bearcats are on the road for their final games against Whitman and Whitworth, February 25 and 26.
