Women's Tennis Opens Season With Victory Over Southern Oregon
SALEM, OR- The Willamette University women’s tennis opened up the spring season with a victory over Southern Oregon University (6-3), winning four of six matches in singles and two of three in doubles.
Senior Ashley Layton started the rally for the Bearcats after Southern picked up the first two wins. Michelle Jordan of the Raiders took Layton to three sets, but Layton prevailed 12-10 in the final set. Layton lost the first set, 2-6, then came back to win the final two sets, 6-0 and 12-10.
Bearcats Alaine Anderson, Hannah Johnson, and Alison Nunamaker
carried the momentum through the rest of the singles competition,
each winning the
match in just two sets. Anderson came away with victories of 6-1 and 6-2.
Johnson added another with scores of 6-2 and 6-4, while Nunamker shut down the Raiders 6-1 and 6-4.
Nunamaker and Anderson saw victory again with doubles partners Melody Kerber and Tiffany Kam. Kerber and Nunamaker helped the Bearcats to an 8-3 victory. Kam and Anderson (8-2) sealed the match, giving Willamette two of three victories in doubles.
For the Raiders, Annie Chaney and Nicole Nakama, took home wins in the singles and doubles competitions. Chaney finished on top with scores of 6-0 and 6-2 over Susan Butler. Nakama won 6-3, 6-3 over Kam.
Chaney and Nakama were partners for the doubles match where they added another victory, 8-3, over Butler and Johnson.
The Bearcats travel to Corvallis, OR Sunday to play the Oregon State Club Team at 1:30pm.
