Bearcats Take Pair From UPS in NWC Baseball Action
SALEM, OR — Matt Johnson drove in three runs in each game, and Zach VandeGriend pitched a complete game in the opener, as the Willamette University baseball team swept a pair of Northwest Conference games from the University of Puget Sound by identical scores of 9-3.
In game one, the Bearcats (5-5 overall, 2-0 NWC) used a seven-run fourth inning to put the game away. Johnson (2-4, 3RBI, 1 run scored) led the Bearcats at the plate. Kelly Gilmore and Grant Yamaguchi each drove in a pair of runs. Ken Halpin scored once and drove in a run with a pair of hits. Dane Woldseth was 1-2 with two runs scored.
VandeGriend (2-1) pitched nine strong innings, giving up eight hits and recording eight strikeouts with no walks.
Tanner Webber drove in a pair of runs with two base hits in the opener for UPS (3-4 overall, 0-3 NWC).
In game 2, the Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Johnson again led the way with a pair of hits, 3RBI and a run scored. Matt Rasmussen was 4-5 in game two, driving in a pair of runs. Center fielder Sean Anderson had a pair of hits and two RBI and Ken Halpin was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
On the mound in game 2, Adam Beebe gave up two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings to post his first win of the season. Chris Murrell helped Beebe out of a jam in the sixth inning before Tye Sundlee pitched three shutout innings to get the save.
