Bearcats Win by a Little, Win by a Lot in Sweep of Bruins

NEWBERG, Ore. — Whether by a narrow margin or by a lopsided score at the end, the Willamette University Bearcats were able to get the best of the George Fox University Bruins and maintain at least a share of first place in the Northwest Conference softball race by taking a doubleheader from the Bruins, 1-0 and 11-3, Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.

Willamette is now 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the league.

The Bearcats’ Laura Milne (2-1) and Brittany Dearing combined on a one-hitter in the opener, and had to be sharp because the Bruins’ Kayla Winkler (2-2) was on top of her game as well. Milne went five innings and allowed only a single down the left-field line by Jill Lacey with two out in the 3rd, and Dearing finished up with two perfect innings.

Winkler scattered five hits, fanned seven, and walked only one, but suffered the tough-luck loss when the Bearcats scored the game’s only run in the 2nd. Kelsey Stolz singled to left with one out, stole second, and came in on Kim Boscacci’s single up the middle.

In the nightcap, it was Stolz’s two-run double in the 6th that broke a 3-3 tie to spark a 3-run rally, and the Bearcats salted the game away with a 5-run 7th. Until that point, however, the game had been a tight one.

Willamette scored single runs in the 1st and 4th innings before the Bruins rallied in the bottom of the 4th.

The Bearcats knotted it in the 5th on a lead-off single by Molly Barnes, a stolen base, a sacrifice, and a run-scoring grounder to short by Marianne Ward. That set the stage for Willamette’s outbursts in the final two innings to take control.

Lauren Andrzejewski went 4-4 and scored 3 runs, Barnes was 3-5, and Stolz, Ward, and Elizabeth Gilgan had 2 hits apiece as the Bearcats collected 15 safeties. The Bruins had 10 hits, led by Plumb, who was 3-4.

Lacey Wade (0-3) took the loss on the mound for the Bruins, while Dearing (2-0) got the win when the Bearcats exploded in the 6th. Brittney Tachara started and worked 2 1/3 innings for Willamette, then came back in to finish the game in the last of the 7th.

The Bearcats are off until Tuesday, Mar. 22, when they will play at Whittier College in California in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
