Bruins Take Two From Bearcats

NEWBERG, Ore. — Getting a little bit of everything — 28 hits by the offense, no errors on defense, and good efforts from four pitchers — the George Fox University Bruins swept a Northwest Conference baseball twinbill from the Willamette University Bearcats, 9-3 and 9-0, Friday afternoon here at Morse Field.

In the opener, Derrick Jones (4-0) spaced eight hits over seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out six with only two walks to pick up the win. Nick Hedgecock, after surrendering Ken Halpin’s first home run of the season on the first pitch he threw in the 8th inning, retired the last six batters he faced to earn his 2nd save.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the 1st against Bearcat ace Zach VandeGriend (3-3) on Jones’ bases-loaded sacrifice fly that scored Drew Johnson and Daniel Down’s single to score C.R. Braniff. Braniff singled in Ryan Fobert in the 2nd to make it 3-0 before Steve Johnson doubled and scored on Sean Anderson’s ground-out to get the Bearcats on the board.

George Fox scored two in the fifth before the Bearcats tried to rally again. Kelly Gilmore singled to left to lead off the inning. Halpin singled him over to second. Brian Gilmore got the RBI with a two-out hit to make it 5-2.
Ken Halpin homered to lead off the 8th to make it 5-3, But the defending national champions scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to 8th to secure the win.

Halpin finished game one 3-4 with a rn and an RBI. Johnson and Brian Gilmore each had two hits.

In the nightcap, Bruin southpaw Brandon Rupp (4-2) surrendered singles to Sean Anderson and Kelly Gilmore to lead off the game before striking out the side, a harbinger of things to come. He allowed only three more hits over the next six innings, finishing with 10 strikeouts and two walks. Alex DeAngelis completed the combination shutout, the Bruins’ first of the year, with two no-hit, four-strikeout innings.

After putting up a run in the bottom of the first in game two, the Bruins exploded for seven runs in the third. Despite three hits from Brian Gilmore, the Bearcats couldn’t get to Rupp and fell 9-0

George Fox is now 16-6 overall, with six straight wins, and 9-2 in the conference, while Willamette is 11-10 overall and 7-5 in the league. The three-game series concludes Saturday with a single game at 12:00 noon in Newberg.
