Cox Drives in Five as Bearcats Beat Pioneers 12-6

PORTLAND, OR — John Cox drove in five runs in the first three innings as the Willamette University baseball team bested the wind and cold of Huston Field to take a 12-6 Northwest Conference win over the Lewis and Clark Pioneers Wednesday afternoon in a rain and darkness-shortened seven inning game.

The Bearcats exploded for ten runs in the first four innings. Sean Anderson started the game of with a walk, Kelly Gilmore reached on an error and Cox delivered an RBI single to drive both home.

Brian Gilmore and Steve Johnson tacked on RBIs in the first for a 4-0 lead.

Willamette tacked on three more in the second when Cox’s double knocked in Ken Halpin and Gilmore.

Cox got RBI No. 5 in the third when he knocked in Gilmore for the third time. It was 10-0 in the fourth when Dane Woldseth scored on an error by the left fielder and Anderson knocked in Matt Rasmussen, who reached on that error.

For the Bearcats, first baseman Cox was 3-5 with two singles and a double in his first three at-bats. He also scored two runs. Second baseman Matt Johnson was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three walks. Gilmore scored three times and Anderson hit home twice.

Drew Herbert(2-0) got the win in relief, going two innings and giving up a pair of runs. Jeff Jensen pitched the first three inning of scoreless ball, allowing only one hit. Clint Moran and Tye Sundlee each got an inning, both giving up a pair of runs.

With the win, Willamette improves to 9-7 (5-2 NWC). The Pioneers fall
to 8-8-1 (0-4 NWC).

The Pioneers open a weekend series against Pacific Lutheran with a noon
Double-header on Saturday.
