Halpin Leads Bearcats to 9-4 Win Over Bethany College
SALEM, OR — Senior Ken Halpin hit run-scoring triples in each of the first two innings, driving in four runs as the Willamette University baseball team beat Bethany College, 9-4, in a non-conference game Thursday afternoon at John Lewis Field.
Halpin tripled in the first to drive home Kelly Gilmore, then scored on a hard ground-out to first by John Cox and the Bearcats (7-5 overall, 3-0 Northwest Conference) took an early 2-0 lead.
Willamette tacked on six more in the second, highlighted by Halpin’s bases-loaded triple. Cox added another RBI on a sacrifice fly and the Bearcats led 6-0 after two innings.
Bethany reached started Jeff Ross for a run in the third, than tacked on three more against Casey Hedrick in the seventh. The Bearcats also got solid performances on the mound from Drew Herbert, who picked up the win, and Zach VandeGriend, who pitched no-hit ball for the final 2 1/3 innings.
Halpin finished the game 3-4 with 4 RBI and two runs scored. Matt Rasmussen added three hits, as did lead-off hitter Sean Anderson. The Bearcats racked up 18 total hits.
The Bearcats are back to conference play this weekend, traveling to Pacific Lutheran for a Saturday double-header and a single game on Sunday.
