VandeGriend and Gilmore Lead Bearcats to 7-4 win Over Pacific
SALEM, OR — Kelly Gilmore drove in three runs and Zach VandeGriend pitched a complete-game seven hitter as the Willamette University Bearcats won the first of a three-game series against Pacific University in a Northwest Conference game at John Lewis Field Sunday afternoon.
The second game of the doubleheader was rained out. The teams will try again Monday with another doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
VandeGriend (pictured left) struck out seven to raise his season record to 3-2. He allowed three earned runs and worked out of several jams caused by four Bearcat errors. The win raised Willamette’s record to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific is now 8-7 overall, 3-4 NWC.
The Bearcats scored in each of the first three innings. Sean Anderson led off the bottom of the first with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Gilmore’s ground-out.
After Pacific tied the game in the top of the second, the Bearcats got three more in the bottom. Steve Johnson knocked in Brian Gilmore for the first run before Anderson and Gilmore delivered RBI hits to put the Bearcats up 4-1
In the bottom of the third, the Bearcats struck again. John Cox led off with a double, then came around to score on Matt Johnson’s RBI single. Dane Woldseth knocked in Johnson and the Bearcats had a 6-2 lead after three innings.
Pacific came back with a pair of runs in the fifth inning before VandeGriend shut the door on the Boxers in the last four innings.
For the game, Anderson was 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Bearcats managed only eight hits in the game. Pacific’s Brandon Larson (0-2) took the loss, giving up six runs in two innings. Allen Sugiyama allowed only a single run in six innings of work.
