Bearcats Drop Pair to Whitworth
SPOKANE, WA — The Willamette University softball team saw its hopes for a Northwest Conference championship take a blow Saturday as the Bearcats dropped a pair of games to the Whitworth Pirates, 2-0 and 4-0, Saturday in Spokane.
The Pirates got outstanding pitching performances to shut out the Bearcats. Whitworth moves to 18-13 overall and 13-7 in the NWC. The Bearcats fall to 18-8 overall, 16-4 NWC. Willamette entered the weekend tied with Linfield for first place in the conference. The Wildcats play four games against Lewis & Clark this weekend.
In game one, the Bearcats were down 1-0 in the top of the sixth when they loaded the bases on singles by Cari Schruth, Marianne Ward and Molly Barnes. But a double play ended the Bearcats rally and the Pirates tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Jo Sonnet out dueled Brittany Tachara on the mound, going seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out 10. Tachara allowed two runs, six hits and struck out seven to take the loss.
In game two, the Pirates posted a pair of runs in both the fourth and the sixth innings. Alana Klaus and Heather Case combined on the six-hit shutout. Laura Milne and Brittany Dearing pitched for the Bearcats, allowing seven hits and four runs between them.
Schruth had three of the Bearcats six hits in game 2.
The teams play again Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
