Bearcats Rebound for Sunday Split Against Whitworth
SPOKANE, Wash. — Kelsey Stolz doubled home Lindsey Braun in the fourth inning to give the Willamette University softball team a 2-1 win and a split of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Whitworth Pirates.
The Bearcats lost the first game, 4-3, and now stand at 19-9 overall and 17-5 in the Northwest Conference.
In game two Sunday, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when April Greer’s single drove in Marianne Ward. After the Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the first, pitcher Laura Milne and Brittany Tachara combined on a three-hitter to shut down the Pirates the rest of the way.
Stolz’s game-winning RBI gave Milne her ninth win of the season against three losses. Tachara picked up her first save of the season.
In the first game, the Bearcats held a 2-1 lead before Whitworth scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bearcats were able to get one run back on Kim Boscaci’s RBI in the top of the seventh, but failed to get the tying run across.
Willamette is scheduled to host first-place Linfield next weekend in a four game series. By winning Sunday's second game, the Bearcats preserved a chance to overtake the Wildcats for first place in the NWC with a four game sweep.
