Bearcats Sweep Pirates Behind Cox and Rasmussen
Spokane, WA — Matt Rasmussen hit a two-run home run in the
eighth inning, leading the Willamette University baseball team to a
6-5 win and a doubleheader sweep of the Whitworth Pirates Saturday
afternoon at Merkel Field in Spokane.
The Bearcats won game one behind Zach VandeGriend’s complete game seven-hitter and home runs from John Cox and Sean Anderson.
Down by a run late in game two, Rasmussen (pictured left) connected on his home run after John Cox had walked to put the tying run on base. Drew Herbert pitched three scoreless innings in relief to get the victory. Rasmussen was 3-4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. Cox, who also homered in the game, was 1-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Bearcats were down 4-1 in the second game before a three-run fourth inning — highlighted by Cox’s two run dinger, tied the game at 4-4. But the Pirates came back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for Rasmussen’s game-winning hit.
In the first game, Zach VandeGriend pitched a complete game seven-hitter, striking out nine, and allowing only a meaningless run in the ninth inning as the Bearcats snapped a six-game conference losing streak.
Cox again was the hitting star, cracking out another home run, as he went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Sean Anderson, the Bearcat’s leadoff hitter, hit his first collegiate home run in the eighth inning.
By then, Cox’s home run and a five-run seventh inning had salted the game away for Willamette. Anderson was 1-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Dane Woldseth added a pair of hits and Matt Johnson chipped in with two RBI to pace the Bearcats.
Willamette is now 12-15 overall and 8-9 in the NWC. Whitworth falls to 11-10, 6-7 NWC.
