Bearcats Sweep Whitman in Northwest Conference Doubleheader
SALEM, OR — Ken Halpin went 3-3 with 3 RBI, Matt Rasmussen clubbed a two-run home run and Zach VandeGriend pitched a complete game seven-hitter as the Willamette University baseball team swept a Northwest Conference double-header from Whitman Saturday at John Lewis Field.
The Bearcats won the second game 6-5 behind a three-run first inning highlighted by John Cox’s two-run double.
The Bearcats evened their season record at 16-16 and moved to 12-10 in the NWC. Whitman fell to 3-23 overall and 1-16 in the NWC.
Halpin doubled in a run to tie the game in the seventh inning of the first game, knocking in Dane Woldseth, who had also doubled. Matt Rasmussen homered to left to give the Bearcats a 6-4 lead. The Bearcats tacked on an unearned run in the eight.
VandeGriend improved his record to 5-4 with the complete game victory. He gave up four runs, two of them unearned, and struck out six.
In the second game, Cox doubled in a pair of runs to give the Bearcats the early lead. After Whitman tied the scored at 3-3, the Bearcats scored three times in the seventh inning.
With two outs, Sean Anderson singled and stole second. Halpin drove him in with his third double of the afternoon, then came around to score on Brian Gilmore’s double.
Whitman came back with a pair of runs in the ninth. But with two runners on and two outs, Cole Smead swung at a pitch that then hit him on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Jeff Ross picked up the win to raise his season record to 2-0. Drew Herbert picked up the save.
The two teams play again Sunday. Bearcat seniors will be honored before the game.
