Double Play Ends The Bearcat's Two Game Victory Over Puget Sound
SALEM, OR- The Willamette University softball team ended their two game victory over the University of Puget Sound with a double play, giving the Bearcats a 4-3 win in the second game, 3-2 in the first.
Willamette improved to a 17-5 overall record and 15-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers fell to 13-12 overall, 6-8 NWC. Willamette remains tied with Linfield College for first place in conference.
With the tying runner on first in the top of the seventh, Freshman Liz Gilgan turned a deep shot into a double play, to end the second game of the doubleheader against the Loggers.
Puget Sound jumped out early in second game when a shot by shortstop Maren Buck (2-2, 2 RBI, 1 run, 1 walk) brought in teammate Lindsay Fujita (1 walk, 1 stolen base, 1 run) in the first inning.
Another Logger run was posted in the top of the fourth to give Puget Sound a 2-0 lead over the Bearcats.
Willamette turned on a fourth inning rally with a double by designated hitter April Greer (1-1, 1 run, sacrifice hit, 1 walk), followed by a Lauren Andrzejewski walk. A single by centerfielder Kelsey Stolz loaded the bases just before pinch hitter Amanda Lindquist knocked a two RBI single.
With the game tied at two, runners on second and third, freshman Geneva Hale smacked another single to bring in two RBI, taking a 4-0 lead over the Loggers.
Laura Milne picked up her eighth win for the Bearcats. Brittany Dearing added her tenth save. Milne and Dearing allowed only five hits for the game.
After a delayed start in the first game, the Loggers battled the Bearcats to ten full innings.
Puget Sound picked up two runs in the top of the fifth, which was matched by Willamette in the sixth.
The teams went head-to-head on the field shutting down batters and allowing no runs for four innings.
The game winning run came in the bottom of the tenth when sophomore Molly Barnes hit a shot to right field to bring in teammate Kim Boscacci.
For Willamette, Barnes hit 2-5 with two RBI. Boscacci hit 3-4 with two runs and a walk. Marianne Ward went two for five with a double and two RBI.
Kayla Wells of Puget Sound hit 2-4 with a double and a run. Fujita hit a double and brought in a run.
Brittney Tachara recorded her seventh win for the Bearcats.
Willamette hosts Pacific Lutheran University Sunday in a doubleheader starting at noon.
